Seeking God – Part II – Do’s, Don’ts, and Dividends

The DO’S

Seek Him First – Matthew 6:33 – But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  No matter what it is we think we want from God, we need Him first.  If we seek Him first, everything else will be taken care of.  Either He will give us what we desire, or our desires will change to want what He gives us.

Seek Him Persistently – Matthew 7:7-8 – Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.  Don’t be indifferent; remember the promise.  But seek Him, not things.

Seek Him with All Your Heart – Not just head knowledge.  Break down the walls; open yourself to God; be vulnerable.

Seek Him Humbly Don’t go to God with a preconceived idea of how your relationship will grow and develop.  Don’t tell God how to do it.  Seek God’s face, His character.  Put Him first; bow down; don’t have an agenda.  Empty your mind of your plans, wishes, desires so you can be open to God’s plan purpose, and desires for you.

Seek Him with a Clean Heart – Turn from wicked ways.  If God shows you an area of your life that needs correction, then change!  Cut it out; obey.  This goes back to being humble.  We must allow that God knows better than we do.  We submit to Him and His authority.

Seek What is Above   Colossians 3:1  “IF THEN you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, thus sharing His resurrection from the dead], aim at and seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.”

The DON’TS

Do Not Seek What the World Seeks Luke 12:29-30 “And you, do not seek [by meditating and reasoning to inquire into] what you are to eat and what you are to drink; nor be of anxious (troubled) mind [unsettled, excited, worried, and in suspense]; For all the pagan world is [greedily] seeking these things, and your Father knows that you need them.”  Do not seek the same things that the world seeks.  Do not seek things.  God knows you need them.  He is Jehovah Jireh, our Provider.  He already knows what we need, and He will give it to us.

Do Not Be Worried  Worry indicates that we want control of the outcome.  That means we are not fully trusting God.  If we fully trust God’s goodness, we will trust His plan.  If it is His plan and it is in His hands, we have nothing to worry about.

Do Not Seek Your Own Will  John 5:30 (Amp) records Jesus’ words. – “I am able to do nothing from Myself [independently, of My own accord–but only as I am taught by God and as I get His orders]. Even as I hear, I judge [I decide as I am bidden to decide. As the voice comes to Me, so I give a decision], and My judgment is right (just, righteous), because I do not seek or consult My own will [I have no desire to do what is pleasing to Myself, My own aim, My own purpose] but only the will and pleasure of the Father Who sent Me.”

John 5:30 (NIV) “By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.”

We cannot seek our own will, thoughts, and ideas.  We can’t rely on our own judgment.  It is flawed.  We can only judge as God gives us His voice and His decision.  This is what Jesus did.  We can do no less.  We cannot to seek our own pleasure but the Father’s pleasure.

The DIVIDENDS

He Rewards  Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out].”

If we seek God in faith, the Bible promises that He will reward us.  Our seeking will not be in vain.  How will we be rewarded?  With a stronger, more intimate relationship with God.

He Hears and Heals  II Chronicles 7:14 says, “If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.”

God will hear when we seek.  And He will forgive us and heal our nation.  That is a great reason to seek Him.  Our nation is in desperate need of a touch of God.

Still seeking Hi. . . until next time,
