The Promised Land – Part 4

January 24, 2012

Deuteronomy 8:7-10

Can we go back a few verses today?

 7For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills;

8A land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey;

9A land in which you shall eat food without shortage and lack nothing in it; a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills you can dig copper.

10When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the Lord your God for all the good land which He has given you.

Just a few thoughts today.

Here we are in the Promised Land.  Look around.  What do you see?  Good land, full of brooks of water, fountains, and springs flowing forth.

If you check the dictionary for a definition of brook, fountain, or spring, you will see words like “natural fresh water, stream, source or head.”

Verse 7 says, “The Lord your God is bringing you into a good land.”  The verb tense used here is present progressive.  Present progressive verbs are used to show continuing action–something happening now and in the future–  something indicating movement or change.

Isn’t it great that God is continually bringing us into a good land filled with water!  Water is a life-giving source.  It is fresh and natural.  The land is good because it has natural, life sustaining qualities.

Notice, however, that though it is a good land, there are still hills and valleys.  There may be struggles, but the good news is that the stream flows THROUGH the valley.  No matter what we go through, God is there refreshing us, providing His life-giving water.

Nothing is lacking here in this good land; there is no shortage. Everything needed to prosper and thrive is naturally available in the Promised Land.  You don’t have to wait for the manna each morning; you can take and eat of God’s creation.  God is still the Provider, but we have more freedom here, more choices.

So, when you have eaten and are full, BLESS the Lord because HE has given you the land!
